Alausi is a small sleepy mountain town with not too much going on especially as we arrived on the night of Ash Wednesday when everything was closed and the whole town appeared to be in the church.

So why have we come to this sleepy little place… because it is the starting point of a train journey. One of the most audacious engineering projects in the Andean mountain range, the change in altitude over a short distance is so great the train has to perform a number of switch backs to make it up and down.

This was a really nice journey in old wooden carriages powered by a steam engine through beautiful scenery.
