Bukit Lawang is home to the largest animal sanctuary for Orangutans and the entry point to the Gunung Leuser National Park one of only a couple of places in the world where you can see Orangutans in the wild.
We opted to hike in the jungle of the national park to hopefully get a change to see wild Orangutans. We had an excellent guide and it was not long until we got our first glimpse in the tree canopy above us, a mother and her baby. Really difficult to photograph but we managed to get a few great shots.
Later we continued our hike to the feeding platform, part of the rehabilitation center, where re-released Orangutans can come back to for supplemental food. We were really lucky and arrived just as some turned up for some food giving us a really great close up experience.
After the hike we had to cross the really fast running river by raft to get back into town and in the evening we headed out for dinner and a dance show by the local girls dance club. Really good fun, we all had to get involved with the dancing.
