Campeche is a small city located on the coast of the gulf of mexico. It was founded by the Spanish in the 1500s on top of an old mayan town.

The historic district of Campeche is surrounded by walled fortifications and the buildings are all brightly colored colonial style.

Back in the day there was a lot of conflict with pirates and the walls and forts of the city aimed to protect the locals, although they did not always hold.

We enjoyed our stay here and the town at night comes alive with a multimedia presentation in the main square depicting the history of Mexico and Compeche… it was surprisingly good.
