Merida is the capital city for the Yucatan state. It is a touristy town and in feeling a little bit different from your average Mexican town.

There is a grand boulevard which the locals like to claim is like the Champs Elysees, it is not, but it does have some big mansions and banks lining the sides of it. Merida is also the cultural hub of the region and there are often performances and festivities taking place within the city.

To be honest we found the place a little strange and were left not really knowing what the big attraction with this place is. Walking the streets we felt safe but for much of the time outside of the main squares everything seemed a little desserted, a little like a ghost town and we were not sure why there were hardly any people about.
