China is a big place and it takes a while to get from place to place and we decided that for a couple of the big journeys we would use the overnight trains.

Our first overnight journey was from Shanghai to Xian. We booked the most expensive ticket available, a soft sleeper in a four birth cabin. The cabin is not quite as small as the photos make out and there is space to store your luggage above the door. We were sharing with a man and a pregnant woman, he snored a bit and she was joined by her boyfriend from cattle class during the night so there were five of us in a room for four, did not matter though. The journey was comfortable enough although people are allowed to smoke in the corridors which is not so nice and the squat toilets are pretty grim lol
