San Carlos de Bariloche is a very popular Argentinian holiday destination. The town is full of chocolate shops and restaurants with live music on most corners. The town has the impression of one that has grown too quickly without a lot of planning and as a result it lacks a bit of charm that other places on Patagonia have. However you don’t really come here for the town, you come here for what is on its doorstep… Nahuel Huapi Lake and National Park.
We crammed a lot of activities into our time here. We rode the ski lift to the top of Cerro Campanario for great views of the lake, Hired bikes and cycled the 24km Chico Circuit around the lake and hired a car to get further out of town and around the 7 lakes. This drive was excellent and also took us to the towns of Villa la Angostura and San Martin de los Andes. There is nothing like driving hundreds of miles in the mountains, such amazing views… the roads could be better as our little Clio struggled with any kind of speed on the unpaved roads.
