Whilst staying in the Bay of Islands we visited the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and Treaty House.

It was here on 6th February 1840, that the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed between Maori and the British Crown.

It was a nice way to learn about the history of New Zealand and you get to explore the Treaty House and marvel at the scale of Ngatokimatawhaorua, one of the world’s largest carved war canoes (waka taua).

For more information you can check out the Waitangi Treaty Grounds Website.
