Day spent traveling from Cancun, Mexico to Lima in Peru. Apart from US Immigration in Miami mistaking me for somebody else the trip went fairly smoothly even though it did take close to 18 hours.
Today we made it across Lima to the starting hotel for our Gap Adventures tour; once checked in we went off to explore Lima before meeting up with the rest of our tour group in the evening for introductions, dinner, Pisco sours and the tour briefing.
Day spent travelling to Paracas from Lima on a luxury bus. Time to get to know the rest of the tour group a little better before checking in at our hotel and heading out for dinner.
Morning boat trip to the Islas Ballestas nature reserve just off the coast of Paracas; the reserve is home to thousands of birds including pelicans, penguins and the blue-footed booby.
We then headed to “the winery place” where we learned how Pisco is made and got to sample quite a few different verities. The dutch courage from this was very much needed for the next activity along the way to Nazca.
Sand boarding and dune buggy-ing, simply awesome (apart from losing my hat).
After returning from the desert we hit up a small oasis town for lunch before boarding the bus to Nazca; on route we got to stop off at a small tower to check out 2 of the Nazca lines formations (the hands and the tree)
Eva took a flight above the Nazca lines while I opted to go into Nazca town with a few others from our group.
In the afternoon we swam in the hotel pool and had an tasty Pachamanca dinner. This is a cooked in the ground with hot rocks type bbq. (Note to all at GTI, this was way better than our failed Top Gun Day pit bbq… the meat was actually cooked!)
Arrived in Arequipa after getting the overnight bus, headed straight to the local market for a freshly squeezed fruit juice breakfast.
In the afternoon we checked out the central square and convent followed by lunch with lots Sangria
Dinner was crepes in a nightclub, odd combination but fun times
Bus journey to Chivay via the highest point of our trip (4900m); Eva suffered from altitude sickness and after the hike in the afternoon we were both ready for bed… a little cold tho as the temp dropped to 0 degrees.
